Getting Involved

What is a School Community Council?

Serving on a School Community Council (SCC) is a wonderful way for parents to be actively involved in their children’s education. In the Canyons School District, School Community Council members review school data, identify school needs, establish school goals, and allocate funds toward accomplishing those goals.  Every year, each School Community Council creates school plans and reviews district plans with the overarching goal of addressing their school’s greatest academic needs and creating a safe learning environment:

Councils prioritize how funds from Utah’s School Learning and Nurturing Development (LAND) Trust program will be used to address the school’s greatest academic needs.    More Information >

Councils allocate funds provided through the Teacher Student Success Act to areas or initiatives that will improve school performance or student academic success.     More Information >

Councils consider and address specific safety concerns faced by students and staff in the classroom, on school grounds, and in traveling to and from school.    More Information >

Councils produce plans and programs that empower students to think critically, behave safely, and participate responsibly in our digital world.    More Information >

Councils address student use of tobacco, alcohol, e-cigarettes and other controlled substances.  These plans also consider peer pressure, mental health and meaningful relationships.

Councils may advise the school principal and provide feedback to the Board of Education on other issues.   More Information >

School Community Councils hold elections once a year to fill open seats, and are comprised of parents and school employees, including the principal. Parents make up the majority of the Council, outnumbering employees by at least two.

Lucie Chamberlain

Alta View Elementary

If a movie about super teachers were ever made, Lucie Chamberlain would be a prime candidate for a leading role. Fortunately for her kindergarten students at Alta View Elementary, she already thrives in a supporting role for them. Parents thank her for being a “super teacher.” She is also described as an “amazing colleague.” Whether students need help in the classroom or from home while sick, Lucie goes above and beyond to help them learn, overcome fears, and feel important and cared for. Lucie is the reason a number of kids went from hating school to loving it, according to parents. The way she exudes patience, sweetness, positive energy, and love for her students with special needs melts is appreciated and admired. One parent noted: “Both my kids wish she could be their teacher forever.” Another added:  “She treats every student like their learning and their feelings are her priority.” Super teacher, indeed!
