In Utah, school choice means providing parents with educational options, and the freedom to choose the best options for their child — and a growing number of families are choosing Canyons School District.
Under state law, parents can apply to have their students attend a school outside their neighborhood boundaries. The Early Enrollment window for applying for school-choice permits runs from Nov. 15 through the first Friday of February. Applying early is recommended as school transfers are approved when space is available and on a first-come, first-served basis.
Canyons continues to be the school district of choice for students from both within and outside our boundaries. Ranked the No. 1 school district in Utah by Public School Review, CSD also tops the charts in Salt Lake County, according to Niche.com. About 23 percent of CSD’s 33,000 students attend the school of their choosing. Of those, 1,200 come from outside the District.
“We’re proud of our track record and, as a public school system, we’re committed to welcoming all students who want to come to Canyons,” said CSD Superintendent Dr. Rick Robins.
With CSD’s ‘no-wrong-door policy,’ it’s easy to find a good fit, from Spanish, French, and Chinese dual immersion programs, the Navy Cadet Corps, or Step2theU partnership through which students can earn two semesters of college while still in high school.
Once a school administrator approves a transfer permit, the permit will renew automatically every year thereafter as long as the student remains at the same school in good standing.
New this year: There is no limit to the number of applications families can submit. When parents submit their permit applications, they’ll be asked to designate their top choices. Administrators and Admissions experts will work with each family to find a place for all students who meet transfer requirements.
“We’ll work one-on-one with them to find a school that suits each student’s and family’s needs,” says Dr. McKay Robinson, CSD’s Assistant Superintendent. “Families really can’t go wrong in finding themselves at Canyons, but we know some are looking for a school close to their home or work, or a special program.”
To guide families through the process, CSD’s Admissions Office has created tutorials in English, Spanish, and French. Answers to frequently asked questions can be found on the Office’s website. The Principal or Assistant Principal at your local school also is a good resource for information.
