Canyons District schools will be serving free breakfast and lunch this year under an extended waiver from the USDA under the Seamless Summer Option (SSO).
All students are automatically eligible for the benefit, which will last through the 2021-2022 school year or until federal funding runs out. Families who think they may qualify for free or reduced-priced lunch, however, are still encouraged to apply so there is no lapse in meal service if the waiver expires.
“Canyons District has worked hard throughout the pandemic to ensure no child goes hungry. The USDA waiver will give us the flexibility to continue to sponsor free, nutritious meals in service of our goal of health, wellness, and learning for all students,” said CSD’s Nutrition Services Director Sebasthian Varas.
Schools will serve the meals in their cafeterias per their regularly established schedules.
Remote-learning students enrolled in Canyons Online can pick up free lunch and breakfast for the next morning at any of the following community sites (pickup times are also designated by each school). Siblings can also receive free meals at these sites, which are available to serve all children 18 year of age or younger:
- Butler Middle, 7530 S. 2700 East, Cottonwood Heights
- Draper Park Middle, 13133 S. 1300 East, Draper
- Jordan High, 95 Beetdigger Blvd., Sandy
- Midvale Middle, 7852 S. Pioneer St., Midvale
Students do not need to be present with their parents to pick up the meals.
Please note that a la carte options are not available for purchase while the waiver is in place. An elementary student, for example, who brings home lunch and wants to purchase a milk can still receive a milk free of charge, but must also choose a fruit or vegetable and another component. In secondary schools, second meals and a la carte items, such as juice, ice cream or sports drinks, are not available for purchase at this time.
Only children are eligible for free meals. Adults may purchase meals using the payment procedures established by the District.
