Canyons Seeks Host Families For 2 Chinese Teachers

Canyons District seeks host families to help two teachers from China acclimate to their new surroundings for the first four weeks they are living in the United States.

The duration of the stay in the host families’ homes would be Aug. 7 to Sept. 4.

The host families will act as a support system for the guest teachers – Yuling Tang, who will teach at Alta and Jordan high schools, and Wei Quin, who is assigned to Indian Hills Middle School – while they become familiar with the Salt Lake Valley, look for permanent housing and adjust to life in an American city.

Host families are compensated $500 for room and board and asked to share the evening meal with the Chinese faculty  to answer any questions the teachers may have about the local culture. The host families would not be required to provide daily transportation nor entertain their guests during the day. The teachers will be busy preparing for the start of the school year.

The District, however, asks host families to be at an orientation and greeting at the University of Utah on Aug. 7.

If you have questions or are interested in serving as a host family, please call Canyons District’s Department of Evidence-Based Learning at 801-826-5045. Emails can be directed to kina.tua@canyonsdistrict.org.

Canyons District supports two elementary school Mandarin Chinese-English dual-immersion language programs and Chinese instruction at all four high schools and six middle schools.

Lucie Chamberlain

Alta View Elementary

If a movie about super teachers were ever made, Lucie Chamberlain would be a prime candidate for a leading role. Fortunately for her kindergarten students at Alta View Elementary, she already thrives in a supporting role for them. Parents thank her for being a “super teacher.” She is also described as an “amazing colleague.” Whether students need help in the classroom or from home while sick, Lucie goes above and beyond to help them learn, overcome fears, and feel important and cared for. Lucie is the reason a number of kids went from hating school to loving it, according to parents. The way she exudes patience, sweetness, positive energy, and love for her students with special needs melts is appreciated and admired. One parent noted: “Both my kids wish she could be their teacher forever.” Another added:  “She treats every student like their learning and their feelings are her priority.” Super teacher, indeed!
