Instructional Coaching Roles & Responsibilities

Instructional Coaches are responsible for supporting Canyons School District schools’ implementation of CSD’s Multi-Tiered Systems of Supports (MTSS) Framework. Coaches work collaboratively to develop teachers’ evidence-based practices and digital teaching and learning skills, implementation of Professional Learning Communities (PLCs), increase the commitment of a culture of public practice, and analyze and interpret school and district data to inform data-based decision making. Placement in schools is determined by the instructional supports department based on school needs and goals. 

Partnership with Principals

  • Discuss and commit to roles
  • Develop yearly coaching plan
  • Check-in with administrator regularly

New Teacher Support

  • Meet or check-in weekly
  • Monthly New Teacher Meetings
  • PEAKS support
  • CTESS support
  • Technology support

Customizing Goals

  • Help administrators with school plans
  • Help administrators with goal setting:
    • Team goals
    • Department goals
    • Individual teacher goals

Team & PLC Support

  • Attend meetings as assigned
  • Provide feedback and support
  • Encourage use of system supports including agendas, problem solving protocol, interventions, PLC forms, etc.
  • Support peer coaching teams

BLT Support

  • Attend school and district BLT meetings
  • Ask questions to open learning conversations
  • If requested, support development of meeting agendas
  • Refer to BLT manual as needed

Assessment & Data Support

  • Support universal assessments with school assessment team
  • Data support for teams and administration
  • Technology support

Professional Learning

  • Design and/or deliver professional development based on school TSSP
  • Support late-start and other PL configurations
  • Track implementation and adjust as needed
  • Utilize CSD PD Protocol

Be a Teacher

  • Model and co-teach
  • Request feedback from teachers
  • Model lesson planning with formative assessments
  • Analyze data or instructional decision making

Public Practice

  • Implement CSD Coaching Model
  • Conduct observations and walkthroughs
  • Use data to set goals
  • Conduct informal IPOPs as requested
  • Support peer observations, video observations, lesson study, etc.

Coaching Community

  • Attend school coaching meetings
  • Collaborate with coaching colleagues
  • Attend Coaching Academy, virtual meetings, peer coaching meetings

Lucie Chamberlain

Alta View Elementary

If a movie about super teachers were ever made, Lucie Chamberlain would be a prime candidate for a leading role. Fortunately for her kindergarten students at Alta View Elementary, she already thrives in a supporting role for them. Parents thank her for being a “super teacher.” She is also described as an “amazing colleague.” Whether students need help in the classroom or from home while sick, Lucie goes above and beyond to help them learn, overcome fears, and feel important and cared for. Lucie is the reason a number of kids went from hating school to loving it, according to parents. The way she exudes patience, sweetness, positive energy, and love for her students with special needs melts is appreciated and admired. One parent noted: “Both my kids wish she could be their teacher forever.” Another added:  “She treats every student like their learning and their feelings are her priority.” Super teacher, indeed!
