Policy 400.09 – Breastfeeding/Lactation in the Workplace

Board Policy

  1. The Board of Education is committed to providing all nursing mothers reasonable accommodations and protection from discrimination in accordance with state law. 
  2. The Board of Education recognizes the need to support breastfeeding and accommodate employees who breastfeed or express milk in the workplace in accordance with state law. 
  3. The Board authorizes the Superintendent and District Administration to establish administrative regulations consistent with this policy, subject to review and approval by the Board.

One Year After Birth Accommodation; Employee Breaks - 400.09-1

  1. For a period of at least one year after the birth of a child, the District will reasonably accommodate an employee’s request to provide breaks for each time the employee needs to breast feed or express milk. 
  2. The employee will consult with their immediate supervisor or the human resources department to determine the frequency and duration of breaks. These breaks shall coincide, to the extent possible, with any other breaks already provided to the employee.

Room or Other Location; Access to Clean and Well-maintained Refrigerator or Freezer - 400.09-2

  1. The District will provide a room or other location for the employee to breastfeed or express milk. This room shall
    1. Not be a bathroom or bathroom stall;
    2. Be maintained in a clean and sanitary condition; 
    3. Provide privacy shielded from the view of or intrusion of coworkers or the public;
    4. Be available at the times and for a duration required by the employee as determined in the consultation with the employee’s supervisor and the human resources department; and
    5. Have an electrical outlet.
  2. If an employee desires to breastfeed or express milk in an alternative location, this request should be addressed in consultation with the employee’s supervisor.
  3. The District will provide access to a clean and well-maintained refrigerator or freezer for the temporary storage of the employee’s breast milk.

Lucie Chamberlain

Alta View Elementary

If a movie about super teachers were ever made, Lucie Chamberlain would be a prime candidate for a leading role. Fortunately for her kindergarten students at Alta View Elementary, she already thrives in a supporting role for them. Parents thank her for being a “super teacher.” She is also described as an “amazing colleague.” Whether students need help in the classroom or from home while sick, Lucie goes above and beyond to help them learn, overcome fears, and feel important and cared for. Lucie is the reason a number of kids went from hating school to loving it, according to parents. The way she exudes patience, sweetness, positive energy, and love for her students with special needs melts is appreciated and admired. One parent noted: “Both my kids wish she could be their teacher forever.” Another added:  “She treats every student like their learning and their feelings are her priority.” Super teacher, indeed!
