Policy 300.14 – Sanitation in Schools: Integrated Pest Management (IPM) Plan

Board Policy

  1. The Board of Education is committed to providing a safe, healthy, well-maintained buildings for our students and the public. It is the policy of Canyons School District to manage pests in and around schools in a manner that protects human health, maintains the integrity of school buildings and grounds, and preserves the environment in accordance with Utah Admin Code R392-200-7 (12). Integrated Pest Management (IPM) focuses on eliminating pest access to food, water, and shelter in an around CSD schools. 
  2. The Board authorizes the Superintendent and District Administration to establish administrative regulations consistent with this policy, subject to review and approval by the Board.

Definitions - 300.14-1

  1. Integrated Pest Management (IPM): Integrated Pest Management is an ecologically based management strategy that provides long-term solutions to pest problems with minimum impact on human health and the environment. IPM relies upon monitoring for possible pests problems, pest prevention through education of staff, improved sanitation, and mechanical means such as pest-proofing buildings. 
  2. IPM Coordinator: an appointed individual by the District leadership to provide oversight and implementation of the IPM program.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) Committee - 300.14-2

  1. The Integrated Pest Management (IPM) Committee is an administrative committee
    whose purpose is to provide guidance, education, and support on programs and
    procedures for pesticide safety and IPM practices. 
  2. The Integrated Pest Management Committee includes, but is not limited to the
    following District personnel: A School Performance Director, Maintenance Coordinator,
    the IPM Coordinator, Risk Management, Nutrition Services, Nursing Services, inspectors,
    and trainers.
  3. The IPM Coordinator and IPM trainers will be responsible for training of faculty, staff,
    students, parents, vendors, and contractors regarding IPM.

Approved Chemical Lists - 300.14-3

  1. A list of approved chemicals will be maintained at each school/facility and must be available for inspection by the District IPM Coordinator. 
  2. The IPM Committee will direct schools to remove from schools sanitation or chemical materials that may be inconsistent with the IPM Plan and that may be too dangerous for student health (i.e., pesticides, bleach, etc).
