Here’s How to Apply for Preschool, Enroll in Kindergarten

Word is getting out about the learning and growth happening in Canyons District’s top-ranked preschool and kindergarten programs.

To meet the needs of the community, preschool is now available at 13 locations across the District. And, with districtwide access to free full-day kindergarten, Canyons District’s kindergarteners now enjoy double the learning and double the fun! Families can also choose a half-day schedule.

For parents of children between the ages of 3-5, January is the time to consider your schooling plans for the 2025-2026 school year. Canyons District accepts applications for tuition-based preschool and begins enrolling kindergarten students Jan. 8 through Feb. 28, 2025.

Making the leap to preschool or kindergarten can feel overwhelming. These early years are full of discovery, growth, and, naturally, a few questions. To help parents with their decision-making and introduce them to CSD’s schools and programs, the District is hosting four Open House events for parents.

Wednesday, Jan. 8, 3:30 p.m. — Willow Canyon Elementary, 9650 S. 1700 East, Sandy

Thursday, Jan. 9, 6 p.m. — Oakdale Elementary, 1900 Creek Rd. (8100 S.), Cottonwood Heights

Tuesday, Jan. 14, 6 p.m. — Bella Vista Elementary, 2131 E. 7000 South, Cottonwood Heights

Thursday, Jan.16, 7 a.m. — Willow Springs Elementary, 13288 S. Lone Rock Dr. (465 E.), Draper

“Parents are free to come whichever event is most convenient for them. We view this as an opportunity for parents to ask questions and learn about our early childhood philosophy, child-initiated and hands-on learning, and research-based curriculum,” said Leigh Ann Fisher, an instructional coach specializing in kindergarten.

Experts will be on hand to walk parents through the logistics of enrolling and answer questions about eligibility and vaccination requirements, full-day versus half-day kindergarten, and more.

“We’ll share tips and resources to help parents prepare their child for that first day of school,” said Terri Mitchell, Early Childhood Program Administrator. “And we’ll send parents home with some learning enrichments and a free pencil case and coloring book.”

  2. DECLARE: To assist with staffing and scheduling, Canyons District asks parents who prefer a half-day schedule to declare their preference in an email to their school’s principal by Feb. 28, 2025. Your school’s principal will then schedule a time to meet to assist you in completing a half-day request form. Questions? Please reach out to your school’s Main Office.
  3. REGISTER: In the spring, schools will invite families to their site-based kindergarten orientations. In the summer, families will receive information about completing CSD’s online back-to-school registration in August.

Lucie Chamberlain

Alta View Elementary

If a movie about super teachers were ever made, Lucie Chamberlain would be a prime candidate for a leading role. Fortunately for her kindergarten students at Alta View Elementary, she already thrives in a supporting role for them. Parents thank her for being a “super teacher.” She is also described as an “amazing colleague.” Whether students need help in the classroom or from home while sick, Lucie goes above and beyond to help them learn, overcome fears, and feel important and cared for. Lucie is the reason a number of kids went from hating school to loving it, according to parents. The way she exudes patience, sweetness, positive energy, and love for her students with special needs melts is appreciated and admired. One parent noted: “Both my kids wish she could be their teacher forever.” Another added:  “She treats every student like their learning and their feelings are her priority.” Super teacher, indeed!
