This year’s lineup of fall musicals at Canyons District high schools includes well-known and Tony Award-winning shows that will appeal to theatergoers of all ages,
Alta and Brighton high schools are both presenting “Roald Dahl’s Matilda: The Musical,” the critically acclaimed show about a precocious girl who has the gift of telekinesis. The girl, Matilda Wormwood, uses her love of books to overcome family and school obstacles, including the dreaded principal Miss Trunchbull. With the help of her teacher, Mrs. Honey, she’s able to navigate the ups and downs of life as a 5-year-old girl.
Alta’s theater department will stage “Matilda” Nov. 20-23 and Nov. 25 with understudies performing Thursday, Nov. 21. Tickets for each 7 p.m. show go on sale the day of the show and can be purchased here.
Brighton High’s production of “Matilda” runs Nov. 21-23 at 7 p.m. with a matinee on Nov. 23 at 2 p.m. Tickets go on sale Nov. 7 and can be purchased here.
Corner Canyon High is marking the 10-year anniversary of the first time the school brought
“Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” to life by bringing it back for another run. The Andrew Lloyd Webber show is based on the biblical story of Joseph and the coat of many colors. Curtains for the 7 p.m. show will go up Nov. 14-16 and Nov. 18. A 1 p.m. matinee will be Nov. 16. Ticket sales begin Nov. 4 and can be purchased here.
In Jordan High’s “The Drowsy Chaperone,” the main character shares with the audience his love for a fictional 1928 musical comedy. As he plays the record for the audience, the musical comes to life in his living room. The characters are introduced on the day of the wedding of an oil tycoon to a Broadway star. The usual wedding comedic antics follow with some trying to persuade the bride not to get married.
The Beetdiggers will stage the show Nov. 14-16 and Nov. 18. Tickets are $6 for students, $8 for adults. Tickets will be sold here.
Hillcrest High’s vaunted theater program is staging “Hadestown,” which takes the audience back to ancient Greece with the myth of Orpheus, Eurydice, Hades, and Persephone. Eurydice is a young girl who works in the industrial version of the underworld to escape poverty. Her singer-songwriter boyfriend Orpheus comes to her rescue, trying to make a deal with Hades. Persephone and Hades argue, ultimately driving Hades out of Hadestown to find someone who will appreciate his home. Deception and love swirl as workers in Hadestown wonder if they will ever achieve the freedom they were promised.
The underworld takes over the stage at Hillcrest Nov. 21-23 and Nov. 25. Tickets are $10-12 and will go on sale Nov. 1 here.
