CSD Sees Growing Demand for Full-Day Kindergarten

Full-day kindergarten has been such a success that Canyons District will, once again, be offering it at each of our 28 elementary schools.

Parents can still choose to have their child attend on a half-day schedule, though most — all but 71 of CSD’s current 2,100 kindergartners — choose the full-day option.

“In Canyons, school choice means more than just where a child goes to school. It means having the choice of enrolling in half-day or full-day kindergarten, and the comfort of knowing that, no matter which option you choose, it will be the right choice for your child,” said CSD’s Instructional Supports Director Dr. Amber Roderick-Landward.

Contact your school of choice for information about kindergarten orientation dates. Families interested in enrolling in a school that is different from their neighborhood school will need to submit a School Choice permit application.

The benefits of full-day kindergarten are numerous and well-documented by researchers.

The extra instructional time makes it easier for students to master the early-learning skills that will lay the foundation for all future learning. Doubling the amount of instruction in English and math opens more opportunities for teachers to personalize their instruction to meet the needs of each child. There’s also more time for science, art, and intentional play activities, such as CSD’s “oral language block,” which is designed to build confidence and oral language skills at a time when young children’s brains are rapidly developing.

Lucie Chamberlain

Alta View Elementary

If a movie about super teachers were ever made, Lucie Chamberlain would be a prime candidate for a leading role. Fortunately for her kindergarten students at Alta View Elementary, she already thrives in a supporting role for them. Parents thank her for being a “super teacher.” She is also described as an “amazing colleague.” Whether students need help in the classroom or from home while sick, Lucie goes above and beyond to help them learn, overcome fears, and feel important and cared for. Lucie is the reason a number of kids went from hating school to loving it, according to parents. The way she exudes patience, sweetness, positive energy, and love for her students with special needs melts is appreciated and admired. One parent noted: “Both my kids wish she could be their teacher forever.” Another added:  “She treats every student like their learning and their feelings are her priority.” Super teacher, indeed!
