Canyons Tops Niche.com Rankings for Second Consecutive Year

Curious how Canyons School District stacks up against the competition?

For the second year running, Canyons ranks No. 1 for Best School Districts in Salt Lake County and the surrounding metropolitan area. That’s according to the 2024 rankings by Niche.com, a platform that connects students with the schools and colleges of their choice.

Included in the rankings are public charter schools, all of which were outpaced by Canyons and all but one of which were outpaced by the five traditional school districts in Utah’s most populous county.

According to Niche’s grading system, CSD earned an overall A-, receiving an A for college prep, an A- for academics, clubs and activities, teachers, and the administration, and a B in diversity.

Like many ranking systems, Niche looks at test scores, but also takes into consideration more holistic factors such as, teacher salaries, survey responses from teachers, students, and parents, online reviews, and the quality of colleges that students go on to attend. For high schools, the accessibility of sports and clubs and activities are also factor along with per-student expenditures and the quality of school facilities.

New for 2024: the ranking platform removed college entrance exam scores from consideration reflecting the rise of test-optional college admissions.

Lucie Chamberlain

Alta View Elementary

If a movie about super teachers were ever made, Lucie Chamberlain would be a prime candidate for a leading role. Fortunately for her kindergarten students at Alta View Elementary, she already thrives in a supporting role for them. Parents thank her for being a “super teacher.” She is also described as an “amazing colleague.” Whether students need help in the classroom or from home while sick, Lucie goes above and beyond to help them learn, overcome fears, and feel important and cared for. Lucie is the reason a number of kids went from hating school to loving it, according to parents. The way she exudes patience, sweetness, positive energy, and love for her students with special needs melts is appreciated and admired. One parent noted: “Both my kids wish she could be their teacher forever.” Another added:  “She treats every student like their learning and their feelings are her priority.” Super teacher, indeed!
