Canyons Board of Education Elects New Leadership Trio

A dedicated public servant and passionate supporter of public schools, Amber Shill was unanimously elected President of the Canyons Board of Education.

She is the second woman to helm Canyons’ seven-member governing body, following Nancy Tingey whose final act as President on Tuesday, Jan. 17 was to nominate Mrs. Shill as her successor.

A three-term Board member with eight years of service, including four years on Board leadership and four years filling various different leadership roles for the Utah School Boards Association, Mrs. Shill “has the experience to lead us forward,” Tingey said. “I am confident…she will serve our District well.”

Also elected to board leadership on Tuesday were Amanda Oaks and Mont Millerberg who will serve as co-Vice Presidents. Oaks first joined the Canyons Board of Education in January 2019 and was re-elected to serve a second term in November 2022. Millerberg was a member of CSD’s inaugural Board of Education and has served two terms.

“Humbled and grateful for the opportunity” to serve as Board President, Mrs. Shill congratulated Oaks and Millerberg on their new leadership roles and offered heartfelt words of thanks to Mrs. Tingey for her calm, steady decade of leadership.

“Nancy has been a mentor to me for probably 14 years when she was the Chair of Brighton High’s School Community Council and I was the vice chair,” Shill said. “She is incredible and has taught me so much. There really is no one who is more dedicated.”

Shill’s path to civic engagement started in neighborhood schools. She has served on multiple district committees and in leadership capacities on the School Community Councils and PTA’s at Bella Vista Elementary, Butler Middle and Brighton High. She has represented Canyons on statewide boards, including the Utah High School Activities Association and the Salt Lake County Parks & Recreation Advisory Board. She is the Past President of the Utah School Boards Association where she also chairs the Joint Legislative Committee.
