Hillcrest’s Andrea Evans, a junior, won the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair Grand Championship and more than $80,000 in scholarships to Westminster College at the Salt Lake Valley Regional Science Fair.

Evans was among several Canyons honorees at the fair from Hillcrest High School; Midvale, Eastmont, Crescent View, Indian Hills and Union middle schools; and Alta View, Bell View, Butler, Canyon View, East Sandy, Granite, Lone Peak, Oakdale, Ridgecrest, Silver Mesa, Sprucewood, and Sunrise elementaries. In all, Canyons secondary students forwarded 35 projects, and elementary students competed with 95 projects in the fair, which attracted about 800 entries. Click here for a list of winners.
 
A few additional highlights:

• Evans’ cellular and molecular biology project, “A Novel Assay to Screen for Anti-Cancer Agents Targeting Receptor Tyrosine Kinase RON,” also received special awards from the University of Utah Alumni Association, the Society for In Vitro Biology, and Westminster College. She will compete next month for additional scholarships the Intel International Science Fair in Pittsburgh.
• Midvale Middle School’s Brandon Cui and Bovey Rao each received a Stockholm Junior Water Prize, and their projects will compete at the I-SWEEEP (International Sustainable World Energy Engineering Environment Project) Olympiad next month in Houston. Cui’s winning project is titled “Banana Peel as a Potential Biosorbent for Sequestering Heavy Metals from Wastewater,” and Rao’s is titled “Green Clean: Dish Washing Detergents Break Down Oil in Water.” Cui also received special awards from the American Society of Civil Engineers and the Great Salt Lake Section of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, and Rao received special honors from the U. Department of Biology.
• Midvale Middle’s Samuel Hollinger was named the Broadcom MASTERS Grand Award Winner for his project, “Electric Lemons.”
• Silver Mesa’s Jared Beck (“Parachute Plunges”) and Ridgecrest’s Hollan Schweitz (“Aerodynamics”) received special awards from the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Utah Section.
