Canyons School District, in partnership with the Utah State Dual Language Immersion (DLI) Program, offers a specialized educational track in Chinese, French, and Spanish, focusing on language proficiency and cultural awareness. 

Aside from Dual Immersion, Canyons also provides a comprehensive World Language program at the secondary level. High school students can select from American Sign Language, Chinese, French, German, Japanese, and Spanish, while middle school students have the choice of French or Spanish.

Both programs are grounded in the significance of multilingualism, which is increasingly acknowledged for its benefits such as enhancing cognitive abilities, improving academic performance, and giving students an advantage in the global workforceClasses focus on immersive language and cultural experiences from the beginning, featuring hands-on activities, real-life scenarios, and engaging teaching methods like group work and role-playing.  By exposing students to multiple languages and cultures, the Canyons School District not only enhances their language skills but also enriches their understanding and admiration for the world’s diverse cultures.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

In the fall every school year, DLI Chinese, French and Spanish students in grades 3-9 complete the ACTFL Assessment of Performance toward Proficiency in Languages or AAPPL.

In May of every school year, 9th grade Chinese, French and Spanish DLI students complete the Advanced Placement or AP exam for world language and culture.

For World Language students who are not in the DLI program, the AAPPL is conducted every spring for a sample group of students in levels 2 and 3 for Chinese, French, German, Japanese and Spanish.  

The online application for dual immersion in Canyons district opens in October and ends in November. Applications are open to all students entering 1st grade.  Kindergarten is only available at Midvale Elementary for students living in the boundaries designated for Midvale Elementary.  Applications for Midvale’s Dual Language Immersion program will be handled through the school.

The Seal of Biliteracy is an award issued by a state department of education or local district to recognize a student who has attained proficiency in English and one or more other World Languages.  Students can learn more and apply for the seal through Canyons School District.   

The Advanced Placement (AP) exam assesses DLI and WL students in World Language (WL) and Culture for Chinese, French, German, and Spanish.  Students take the exam every year in the month of May.  

Any 10th-12th grade students who pass the AP World Language and Culture exam with a 3 or above in a language can enroll in Bridge classes.
