Enrolling your Child for School During the COVID-19 School Dismissal

Are you looking to enroll a child in one of our schools —  now, or for the coming year?

Canyons School District has launched an online enrollment portal to assist families in registering new students during the COVID-19 pandemic so they can take advantage of the at-home instruction being provided throughout the “soft closure” of our schools. Traditionally, students who are new to Canyons have had to register in person so they can provide verifiable copies of their birth certificate along with other required documentation.

Now, to streamline the process, the District has created a way for families to scan and preliminarily submit those documents online. The online tool is available to all those enrolling in Canyons for the first time, whether they’ve recently relocated here and need to enroll in classes immediately, or they’re a toddler preparing for “big kid school” in the fall.

“The registration process is not complete until approved by each school’s registrar. But this online tool will make it easier for families to start the process so new students don’t miss out on any instruction and we can quickly connect them with a teacher and instructional materials,” says Dr. Floyd Stensrud, CSD’s Director of Planning and Enrollment.

To access the enrollment tool, click here and follow the prompts.

If you have more than one child registering, you’ll need to complete an online form for each child. In addition to basic demographic information —  home address, the child’s birth date, etc. —  you will be asked to designate the school in which you plan to enroll your child. You can locate your boundary school at this link. As a reminder, enrollment in a non-boundary school is contingent upon approval of a school choice transfer permit.

Before logging in to the portal, it’s recommended that you have on hand a scanned copy of your child’s birth certificate, immunization records, and proof of residency. If you are unable to upload these documents at this time, or you are living without a fixed residence, the school will contact you to collect the paperwork needed to complete your registration.

It is possible to start filling out the online form and save it for completion at a later time. But once you submit the form, you will have to work with your child’s school to make any changes.

If you don’t have access to a computer at home, contact the school in which you intend to enroll for assistance.

Note: This enrollment tool is not intended for students who are already enrolled in a Canyons school. The online registration window for returing students typically opens in early August and is advertised in the summer.

Lucie Chamberlain

Alta View Elementary

If a movie about super teachers were ever made, Lucie Chamberlain would be a prime candidate for a leading role. Fortunately for her kindergarten students at Alta View Elementary, she already thrives in a supporting role for them. Parents thank her for being a “super teacher.” She is also described as an “amazing colleague.” Whether students need help in the classroom or from home while sick, Lucie goes above and beyond to help them learn, overcome fears, and feel important and cared for. Lucie is the reason a number of kids went from hating school to loving it, according to parents. The way she exudes patience, sweetness, positive energy, and love for her students with special needs melts is appreciated and admired. One parent noted: “Both my kids wish she could be their teacher forever.” Another added:  “She treats every student like their learning and their feelings are her priority.” Super teacher, indeed!
