Getting Involved

Special Education Preschool

Every child is entitled to a public education regardless of disability. Children with disabilities may go without services because families are not fully aware of their options. We will help you through the process of having your child evaluated for special needs services.

After completing the evaluation process, parents can apply for their special needs children to attend any Canyons School District preschool program for free.  Students with special education needs are placed in the same classrooms as all other students so that they will have role models in language and social skills.

Special Needs and Disability Evaluations

For children ages 3-5, please contact our Early Childhood Department via email at earlychildhood@canyonsdistrict.org

For children age 2 or younger, please contact the Jordan Child Development Center at 801-567-8510 or click here to visit their website.

Carson Smith Scholarship Notice

School districts and charter schools are required by Utah law, 53A1a-704(10), to inform parents of students with IEPs enrolled in public schools, of the availability of a scholarship to attend a private school through the Carson Smith Scholarship Program.  This information can be found on the Utah State Board of Education website.

Lucie Chamberlain

Alta View Elementary

If a movie about super teachers were ever made, Lucie Chamberlain would be a prime candidate for a leading role. Fortunately for her kindergarten students at Alta View Elementary, she already thrives in a supporting role for them. Parents thank her for being a “super teacher.” She is also described as an “amazing colleague.” Whether students need help in the classroom or from home while sick, Lucie goes above and beyond to help them learn, overcome fears, and feel important and cared for. Lucie is the reason a number of kids went from hating school to loving it, according to parents. The way she exudes patience, sweetness, positive energy, and love for her students with special needs melts is appreciated and admired. One parent noted: “Both my kids wish she could be their teacher forever.” Another added:  “She treats every student like their learning and their feelings are her priority.” Super teacher, indeed!
