NEW Students to Canyons:

If a student is new to Canyons, and has never attended a CSD school, parents will need to first create a Skyward Family Access account by completing the New Student Online Enrollment form. The Skyward Family Access account is the gateway parents will use this year, and every subsequent year, to register students. Starting on Aug. 7, once new-student parents have created an account, they can then log in to Skyward and select “New Student Enrollment” to complete the back-to-school registration process for each new student.

Returning Students:

If a child has attended CSD in the past, the parents will use the Guardian Skyward Family Access ID and Password to begin the registration process. Once logged in to Skyward,  parent can simply follow the prompts and make personal identification updates as needed. Families will receive an email with login information. When registering, parents will replenish school lunch accounts and pay any school fees using a credit card. Families can apply for fee waivers by completing the free and reduced-price lunch application during registration. While registration for most students will be done online, parents may still register in person if they prefer.  Schools can be contacted for the specific dates and times they will be open for your walk-in registration convenience. Need help logging in to Skyward? Call 801-826-5525.

VOLUNTEER

Be a classroom helper, tutor students, collect school supplies, or contribute to fundraising activities. The volunteer opportunities in CSD schools are only as limited as your imagination. Even the most time-pinched parents can find ways to support their neighborhood school — and many do. Over the past 10 years, more than 126,000 parents and patrons have contributed an estimated 1.6 million hours of service to Canyons District schools. Each year, in accordance with state law, all Canyons District volunteers must submit a Volunteer Application which can be found on the District’s website and completed online by following the prompts. Because it can take up to 72 hours for applications to be processed, it’s recommended that prospective volunteers apply well in advance of their scheduled volunteer shift. School visitors, such as family members attending a school event, are not considered volunteers and are not required to complete an application. Information about the screening requirements for volunteers can be found at volunteer.canyonsdistrict.org. Questions? Please call 801-826-5171.

JOIN THE PTA

The PTA/PTSA means different things to different people. But all parents, grandparents, educators, students, and others who are active in schools are invited to join our officially recognized parent association. It’s a great way to stay informed and get to know your child’s teachers, school staff, and other parents. You can choose your level of commitment. Don’t have time to volunteer? That’s fine. Your dues will help support school activities, field trips, and more! Of all the factors that determine student success, parental involvement is among the most important. Follow this link and sign up today  to meet new people and have a voice in decisions that impact your student and all students.

THINK SAFE

The safety of students and employees is chief among the priorities of the Canyons Board of Education and Administration. Since 2010, the Canyons community has invested in safe, welcoming and prepared buildings. Some measures are obvious, such as security cameras, emergency preparedness drills that schools practice throughout the year and vestibules that require visitors to check-in at the Main Office before entering schools. But much of what CSD does is invisible. From the Internet filters CSD uses to safeguard students from accessing inappropriate online content to the consistent rules and expectations we enforce to keep our classrooms free from bullying, harassment and discrimination, Canyons District is building safe schools from the inside out. One of the most powerful ways to prevent harm is to prevent it from happening in the first place — and CSD has a high-tech tool at our disposal to facilitate that. The SafeUT mobile app allows anyone to anonymously report acts of bullying and threatened violence, or to seek help for emotional crises, suicidal threats and addiction problems. The service is monitored 24 hours a day and seven days a week by school administrators and counselors at the University of Utah’s Huntsman Mental Health Institute. Lucie Chamberlain

Alta View Elementary

If a movie about super teachers were ever made, Lucie Chamberlain would be a prime candidate for a leading role. Fortunately for her kindergarten students at Alta View Elementary, she already thrives in a supporting role for them. Parents thank her for being a “super teacher.” She is also described as an “amazing colleague.” Whether students need help in the classroom or from home while sick, Lucie goes above and beyond to help them learn, overcome fears, and feel important and cared for. Lucie is the reason a number of kids went from hating school to loving it, according to parents. The way she exudes patience, sweetness, positive energy, and love for her students with special needs melts is appreciated and admired. One parent noted: “Both my kids wish she could be their teacher forever.” Another added:  “She treats every student like their learning and their feelings are her priority.” Super teacher, indeed!
