Power has been restored to three Sandy schools affected by weather-related outages, making it possible for classes to resume on Thursday.
Classes will resume Thursday, Sept. 10 at Albion Middle and Quail Hollow and Brookwood elementary. Buses will run per usual and classes will start per each school’s established schedule. Online instruction also will resume.
Utility companies have been working around the clock to restore electricity to schools, businesses and homes that lost power in the aftermath of hurricane-force winds that whipped through northern Utah on Tuesday, downing trees and power lines. Some repairs are still underway, but crews were able to bring Albion, Quail Hollow and Brookwood online by late Wednesday afternoon.
The schools had limited generator power, but it wasn’t enough to keep the HVAC units running at the speeds needed to property ventilate the buildings as part of CSD’s COVID-19 safety precautions. The heating systems at the schools also haven’t been running since the power went out Tuesday.
A robo-call and email were sent via Canyons District’s emergency-notification system Wednesday evening to notify families of Thursday’s reopenings.
The trio of schools were the only storm-related closures in the 33,000-student Canyons District.
