Is Your Child a Good Fit for CSD’s Advanced-Learner Program?

Have you noticed that your child has an insatiable curiosity or a need to explore subjects in surprising depth? Or an ability to quickly learn complex information? Or a near constant need for mental stimulation?

If so, your student might be a candidate for Canyons District’s SALTA magnet program for advanced learners. SALTA, Supporting Advanced Learners Toward Achievement, serves students who demonstrate significantly high cognitive and academic abilities in comparison to their peers.

Students in kindergarten through the seventh grade can apply online to test into the program for the 2024-2025 school year starting Tuesday, Sept. 5, 2023.

Every child is different and learns differently. SALTA is one of many programs offered by Canyons School District with the belief that all children deserve educational opportunities appropriate for their learning needs — opportunities to push them to stretch, grow, and achieve their potential.

The deadline for applying is midnight Friday, Oct. 6, 2023. Late applications will not be accepted.

Due to the time-intensive and rigorous nature of the process for determining a student’s fit for the program, parents are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the testing requirements and characteristics of advanced learners (see below) before completing an application.

Parents who apply for testing, will receive an email with more information on testing times and locations. All testing will take place in October and November, and the results will be reported in January.

SALTA magnet classrooms are currently located at: Peruvian Park Elementary, Sunrise Elementary, and Midvale Middle.

Lucie Chamberlain

Alta View Elementary

If a movie about super teachers were ever made, Lucie Chamberlain would be a prime candidate for a leading role. Fortunately for her kindergarten students at Alta View Elementary, she already thrives in a supporting role for them. Parents thank her for being a “super teacher.” She is also described as an “amazing colleague.” Whether students need help in the classroom or from home while sick, Lucie goes above and beyond to help them learn, overcome fears, and feel important and cared for. Lucie is the reason a number of kids went from hating school to loving it, according to parents. The way she exudes patience, sweetness, positive energy, and love for her students with special needs melts is appreciated and admired. One parent noted: “Both my kids wish she could be their teacher forever.” Another added:  “She treats every student like their learning and their feelings are her priority.” Super teacher, indeed!
