6 Essentials for Equitable Learning

Every StudentEvery Day

The 6 Essentials by Tanya Ward-Singer provide a foundation for multilingual learner supports in Canyons School District as they are 6 verbs that shape the continuous process of teaching for impact.

Create a climate in which every student feels valued as a scholar capable of excellence. Creating such a climate is as important to learning as oxygen is to breathing. Without it, any instructional approach you use will likely fail.

VALUE

The verb value is the umbrella term overarching and ever-present in the climate we create by valuing all students in our classroom and the many assets they bring including their home language, their cultural backgrounds and unique experiences.  Without establishing VALUE, all other essential actions will not help students progress.

EXPECT
All students are valued by being held to the same high expectations.  Providing clear learning objectives ensures student success.
ENGAGE
Effective teachers use a variety of strategies to ensure students have access to grade level content through language.
OBSERVE
As students are engaged, impactful teachers notice student strengths and build on them or adjust instruction for those who are struggling.
SUPPORT
Based on observations, impactful teachers strategically implement scaffolds to support and challenge students in their learning.
REFLECT
When teachers own their impact, they continuously reflect and refine their instruction to help students succeed.

Lucie Chamberlain

Alta View Elementary

If a movie about super teachers were ever made, Lucie Chamberlain would be a prime candidate for a leading role. Fortunately for her kindergarten students at Alta View Elementary, she already thrives in a supporting role for them. Parents thank her for being a “super teacher.” She is also described as an “amazing colleague.” Whether students need help in the classroom or from home while sick, Lucie goes above and beyond to help them learn, overcome fears, and feel important and cared for. Lucie is the reason a number of kids went from hating school to loving it, according to parents. The way she exudes patience, sweetness, positive energy, and love for her students with special needs melts is appreciated and admired. One parent noted: “Both my kids wish she could be their teacher forever.” Another added:  “She treats every student like their learning and their feelings are her priority.” Super teacher, indeed!
