Elementary Science & STEAM

Science literacy is as important as reading and writing for all people.” (NSTA). Integration of inquiry-based 3D Science opportunities and scaffolded literacy instruction empowers CSD elementary students. Students are learning to research and communicate like scientists, by engaging with rich informational text and deepening their understandings through academic writing and rich discussions. Students also collect, organize and analyze data while using math strategies to develop reasoning to support phenomena. Our students are developing the skills needed to interact with, and understand, the world around them.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Utah SEEd standards do not completely align with the NGSS standards so an additional Teachers Edition has been provided to all 4th and 5th grade teachers with the required curriculum. The student notebooks already have the additional resources included in them.

For 4th grade, Standard 4.3.2 (Waves) is not covered in McGraw Hill perfectly. In the past, Earthquake movement (lesson 2) was used to model waves. If this works for you, please continue to use it.  If it doesn’t, a CSD-created Mini Unit has been created to replace this component from McGraw Hill.

  • Follow the pacing in the Curriculum Map, and use the resource provided.
  • Add additional components ONLY if time permits.
  • Remember, your school might have more or less time allocated for science instruction; be creative. For example, you might include one of the “explain” activities in an ELA center station that supports the current phenomena if you do not have enough time during your science block. Focus on teaching the big ideas.
  • Do your best with the time you have!

Lucie Chamberlain

Alta View Elementary

If a movie about super teachers were ever made, Lucie Chamberlain would be a prime candidate for a leading role. Fortunately for her kindergarten students at Alta View Elementary, she already thrives in a supporting role for them. Parents thank her for being a “super teacher.” She is also described as an “amazing colleague.” Whether students need help in the classroom or from home while sick, Lucie goes above and beyond to help them learn, overcome fears, and feel important and cared for. Lucie is the reason a number of kids went from hating school to loving it, according to parents. The way she exudes patience, sweetness, positive energy, and love for her students with special needs melts is appreciated and admired. One parent noted: “Both my kids wish she could be their teacher forever.” Another added:  “She treats every student like their learning and their feelings are her priority.” Super teacher, indeed!
