Connie Crosby’s job requires a heart of gold and a backbone of steel. As the homeless student liaison for Canyons District, she focuses her time on making sure that children who are, however temporarily, without a home have the tools they need to receive an education.
Sometimes that includes making sure they have backpacks, books, and clean clothes when they head back to school. At other times, it means arranging doctor visits and immunization appointments.
Crosby’s efforts were recently recognized by the Utah School Counselor Association, which honored her with the Utah School Counselors Human Rights Award for a second time. Colleagues also had an opportunity to show their appreciation for Crosby and the cause she so ably champions during Canyons District’s 10th annual Gathering for Good employee luncheon and fund-raiser. About $10,000 was raised through a silent auction and donation drive benefitting students and families residing at The Road Home homeless shelter in Midvale. The money will be used by Crosby to provide students with services and supports that aren’t covered by federal funding. With Crosby, students know they always have a safe place to go.

Dozens of local businesses, community partners and individuals donated items for the silent auction. A video performance of “Jingle Bells” by Jordan Valley students brought added cheer to the event, and the Nutrition Services Department spent hours planning, preparing, transporting and serving a hot, homemade meal for everyone to enjoy. They were given a big hand by the custodial, purchasing and warehouse crews.
