Roundtable Priority Items

Committees will be formed to focus on the four emphasis areas of the Board of Education’s recently-approved Strategic Plan. The standing groups will be asked to ensure the District’s initiatives are tied to the Board of Education’s priorities of “high-quality learning,” “access and opportunity,” “human-centered supports,” and “operating systems.” Superintendent Dr. Rick Robins said future discussions and presentations could focus on setting baselines for performance, indicators of success, and achievement targets. The Board’s plan is the first comprehensive growth blueprint in Canyons’ 13-year history.

Recognitions

The following were recognized for their achievements:

• Alta View Principal Scott Jameson, who was named Utah’s National Distinguished Elementary Principal of the Year
• Alta High soccer player Carter Bell, who was named the 5A Player of the Year by the Deseret News
• Corner Canyon High soccer player Samir Cuevas, who was named the 6A Player of the Year by the Deseret News
• Utah and Region 17 PTA for winning the Outstanding State PTA Advocacy Award at the national conference in Maryland last week

Canyons Board of Education member Amber Shill, past president of the Utah School Boards Association, presented upcoming events and activities of the USBA.

Consent Agenda

The Board of Education approved the Consent Agenda, including approval of the minutes of the Board of Education meeting on June 7, 2022;  hire and termination reports; purchasing bids; student overnight travel requests; and May financial reports.

Superintendent Reports

Superintendent Robins reiterated the importance of school safety, given the recent tragedy in Uvalde, Texas. Dr. Robins updated the Board on the progress of a safety and security audit that is being  conducted this summer. Recommendations to enhance safety in CSD schools will be presented in several weeks, he said. He also thanked the District’s law-enforcement partners for their work providing security to schools.

Board of Education Reports

Mrs. Holly Neibaur expressed appreciation for the upcoming safety and security audit and encouraged a continued focus on the mental health of students.  She thanked CSD’s administrators for their hard work and long hours during the school year.

Mr. Steve Wrigley noted that work is well under way to evaluate and review the District’s facilities and procedures for safety.  Mr. Wrigley is one of the Board representatives on CSD’s Emergency Management Team. He said he was grateful for the feedback he’s received during the primary election campaign.

President Tingey mentioned the work CSD educators and administrators are doing over the summer, including professional-development seminars, to be well-prepared for the coming school year. She wished families a safe and fun summer.
