The event kicked off on Monday with the judging of more than 100 Elementary Division entries by fifth- and sixth-graders who sought to answer such questions as: Do your eyes trick your tastebuds, and which brands of gum blow the best bubbles? Secondary school entries will be judged later in the week.
At the conclusion of the fair, judges will choose several dozen projects to advance to the regional Salt Lake Valley Science and Engineering Fair in March, where students can win tens-of-thousands of dollars in college scholarships.
A select number of students may also be eligible to participate in the International Science and Engineering Fair. Canyons District has been represented every year at the International Fair since its creation in 2009.
Following the judging of Monday’s Elementary Division will be an open house to showcase the entries on Tuesday, Jan. 31 from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Judging for the secondary division (seventh- through 12th-grades) is on Wednesday, Feb. 1 from 4 to 7 p.m., followed by an open house on Thursday, Feb. 2 from 4 to 5:30 p.m. All the events will take place at Canyons’ Professional Development Center, 9361 S. 300 East in Sandy.
