The spirit of the holiday season isn’t something that can be touched, seen or even easily described. And yet it was fully apparent at Canyons District’s 8th annual Gathering for Good employee luncheon and fund-raiser.
Nearly $7,000 was raised through a silent auction and donation drive benefitting students and families residing at The Road Home homeless shelter in Midvale. The money will be used to provide services and supports that aren’t covered by federal funding, said CSD’s Homeless Liaison Connie Crosby.
Located within Canyons District’s boundaries, the shelter is at capacity, and demand is growing as the numbers of homeless individuals and families rise Utah reported a double-digit increase in homelessness in 2016. Within Canyons District alone there are nearly 1,300 students who, according to federal standards, lack a fixed, regular or adequate residence.
“The need is high, but thankfully we have a very generous community,” Crosby said. Indeed, it took a small army to organize the event, and the support of the entire Canyons District community. Dozens of local businesses, community partners and individuals donated items for the silent auction. Jordan Valley students performed excerpts from “The Polar Express,” and the Nutrition Services Department spent hours planning, preparing, transporting and serving a hot, homemade meal for everyone to enjoy. They were given a big hand by the custodial, purchasing and warehouse crews. And who could forget the surprise visit from Mr. and Mrs. Claus?
