What classes can help high school students prepare for college? Which skills will be needed in the workforce of tomorrow? Parents will receive answers to these questions and more at two free workshops, offered in English and in Spanish, on Thursday, Nov. 12, 2015.
The free, evening workshops for families of CSD high school students come as CSD gears up for Utah College Application Week Nov. 16-20. Â The following workshops will be held at the Canyons Administration BuildingEast, 9361 S. 300 East in Sandy:
- Picture This: Tami Pyfer, Education Advisor to Gov. Gary R. Herbert and adjunct faculty at Utah State University, will discuss the importance of post-secondary education in tomorrow’s workforce. Board Room, 7-8 p.m.
- Parents: Help Your Child Prepare for College: Karla Motta, Academic Bridge Coordinator at the University of Utah’s College of Education, will lead this workshop for Spanish-speaking families. Professional Development Center (southeast entrance), 7:30-8:30 p.m.
College Application Week encourages all high school seniors to fill out a viable college application, during the school day and with help from counselors and volunteers. Â In efforts to remove barriers to college, the Canyons Education Foundation will provide up to $15,000 to cover college application fees for students in need during College Application Week.
Utah College Application Week, sponsored by the Utah System of Higher Education’s StepUp to Higher Education campaign, complements the Canyons Board of Education’s mission to ensure all students are ready for college and careers when they graduate high school. CSD realizes that not all high schools students know the path they will take after they graduate. College Application Week is aimed at opening doors for students, so that they have every opportunity to succeed after high school, wherever their dreams may take them.
