The Canyons Board of Education and Administration issue the following statement on HB0331:

“Throughout the vast challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic, Utah’s public schools have provided a high-quality education, nutritious meals, wellness supports, and access to individualized learning opportunities for every child. Canyons District believes that now more than ever is the time for Utah to reaffirm its commitment to public schools by turning back any proposal that redirects taxpayer funds to subsidize and incentivize students toward private school interests.

The state legislature is currently considering HB0331, which in all its iterations seeks to appropriate public funds to private schools rather than to public schools. Canyons District reiterates its longstanding opposition to legislation promoting vouchers, tax credits or other mechanisms that divert funds from public schools to non-transparent private enterprises.

We have serious concerns about the minimal accountability for student achievement with no assurance that appropriate curriculum and materials are being used, and whether students of all socio-economic levels can feasibly participate should HB0331 become law. We also have concerns about the increased financial burden on the taxpayers of Utah, especially in tight budget years, as the proposal would pay up to three times the state Weighted Pupil Unit for a student who participates in the scholarship program.

We know that every child can succeed and that is best accomplished in a public system where children from varying backgrounds learn together. Canyons District is committed to working with parents and students to provide each student with the instruction, supports, and experiences to foster opportunities for their success throughout their lives. We appreciate the support received from our community in fulfilling this mission, and we remain steadfast in our belief that, with strong public schools, our neighborhoods thrive.

The Canyons Board of Education and Administration urge Utah legislators to carefully weigh these issues and ensure that all education-related appropriations of public funds be used to support public schools.”
