Twenty-eight CSD Winter-Sport Athletes Earn Academic All-State Awards

Work hard, play hard. That’s how Canyons District student-athletes approach their studies and competitions. For proof of this, look no further than the number of seniors at Alta, Brighton, Corner Canyon, Hillcrest and Jordan high schools who have earned Academic All-State honors for the 2021-2022 Winter Sport season.

Twenty-eight students representing all five of Canyons School District’s traditional high schools are receiving the prestigious academic-excellence award from the Utah High School Activities Association in drill, swimming, girls and boys hoops, and wrestling.

This brings to 63 the number of student-athletes who have received Academic All-State Awards during this school year.

For some three decades, the UHSAA has given this special recognition to senior athletes who have excelled academically while also performing and competing at elite levels.

Academic All-State Awards are given to students who have a 4.0 cumulative GPA or meet an index score that takes into account a student’s grades and college-entrance exam scores. A student with a 3.9 GPA, for example, would also need to score a 30 or higher on the ACT in order to qualify.

Congratulations to our 2022 awardees for winter sports. Academic All-State winners in theater, debate, and music, which are considered winter-time activities, will be announced at a later date.

Lucie Chamberlain

Alta View Elementary

If a movie about super teachers were ever made, Lucie Chamberlain would be a prime candidate for a leading role. Fortunately for her kindergarten students at Alta View Elementary, she already thrives in a supporting role for them. Parents thank her for being a “super teacher.” She is also described as an “amazing colleague.” Whether students need help in the classroom or from home while sick, Lucie goes above and beyond to help them learn, overcome fears, and feel important and cared for. Lucie is the reason a number of kids went from hating school to loving it, according to parents. The way she exudes patience, sweetness, positive energy, and love for her students with special needs melts is appreciated and admired. One parent noted: “Both my kids wish she could be their teacher forever.” Another added:  “She treats every student like their learning and their feelings are her priority.” Super teacher, indeed!
