Canyons District’s 2017 Teachers of the Year

These classroom powerhouses are the superheroes preparing the leaders of the future. Congratulations to all of the 2017 Canyons School District Teachers of the Year, who will be named in surprise celebrations at every school in Canyons District in the coming weeks.  Even without capes, biceps of steel and magic powers, these outstanding educators inspire students of all ages, be they in a kindergarten class in Sandy, or at the Utah State Prison’s South Park Academy. Each was nominated by peers, parents and students for the Teacher of the Year award, for which they received donated gifts and prizes from area business partners.

All school Teachers of the Year now vie for the District Teacher of the Year award, which will be announced at a Board of Education Recognitions Event on Tuesday, April 25 in the Professional Development Center of the Canyons Administration Building, 9361 S. 300 East. A reception will be at 7 p.m.  The announcement ceremony will begin at 7:30 p.m.  The District Teacher of the Year award comes with additional prizes, including a $1,000 check from the Canyons Education Foundation.  The winner also will represent Canyons in the state Teacher of the Year competition.

All Teachers of the Year also will be recognized during the 7 p.m. Friday, June 9, 2017 Salt Lake Bees game at Smith’s Ballpark, 77 W. 1300 South. Please plan to join us that evening for a fun night with Salt Lake’s minor-league baseball team.

Please join us at the Tuesday, April 25 announcement to find out who will be chosen as the District’s overall Teacher of the Year.

Lucie Chamberlain

Alta View Elementary

If a movie about super teachers were ever made, Lucie Chamberlain would be a prime candidate for a leading role. Fortunately for her kindergarten students at Alta View Elementary, she already thrives in a supporting role for them. Parents thank her for being a “super teacher.” She is also described as an “amazing colleague.” Whether students need help in the classroom or from home while sick, Lucie goes above and beyond to help them learn, overcome fears, and feel important and cared for. Lucie is the reason a number of kids went from hating school to loving it, according to parents. The way she exudes patience, sweetness, positive energy, and love for her students with special needs melts is appreciated and admired. One parent noted: “Both my kids wish she could be their teacher forever.” Another added:  “She treats every student like their learning and their feelings are her priority.” Super teacher, indeed!
