Parent Seminar on Youth Protection Begins Jan. 29

The Canyons Family Center, which offers free courses and other counseling services to the CSD community, is unveiling the new Parent Seminar on Youth Protection. The four-part seminar, which begins Jan. 29, 2014, is designed to inform parents about resources and student supports regarding a number of issues that may challenge children and adolescents and comply with a a new state law.

The Parent Seminar on Youth Protection includes such topics as substance abuse, bullying, mental health, Internet safety and suicide prevention. Canyons last fall hosted a suicide prevention seminar for parents. The seminar was held at Hillcrest High.

Canyons Family Center provides a number of other classes designed to help parents help children through various issues, including how to make and keep friends, manage ADHD, and curb bullying. Specialty classes also include anger management; substance abuse, including smoking cessation; and truancy. The Canyons Family Center is located at Copperview Elementary.

Hours of the Canyons Family Center:

Monday – 10 a.m.-3 p.m.
Tuesday – 10 a.m.-9 p.m.
Wednesday – 10 a.m.-9 p.m.
Thursday – 10 a.m.-4 p.m.

Lucie Chamberlain

Alta View Elementary

If a movie about super teachers were ever made, Lucie Chamberlain would be a prime candidate for a leading role. Fortunately for her kindergarten students at Alta View Elementary, she already thrives in a supporting role for them. Parents thank her for being a “super teacher.” She is also described as an “amazing colleague.” Whether students need help in the classroom or from home while sick, Lucie goes above and beyond to help them learn, overcome fears, and feel important and cared for. Lucie is the reason a number of kids went from hating school to loving it, according to parents. The way she exudes patience, sweetness, positive energy, and love for her students with special needs melts is appreciated and admired. One parent noted: “Both my kids wish she could be their teacher forever.” Another added:  “She treats every student like their learning and their feelings are her priority.” Super teacher, indeed!
