As Shakespeare would say, students at Alta, Corner Canyon and Hillcrest have achieved greatness – and they’ve had greatness thrust upon them. On a replica of an Elizabethan stage, young thespians from the schools won top awards at the 37th annual Shakespeare Competition at Southern Utah University. The competition is touted as the nation’s largest scholastic contest of its kind.

The honors in the schools’ respective divisions are as follows:

– Alta: Sweepstakes First Place, Buckingham Division;
– Corner Canyon: Sweepstakes Second Place, Ensemble First Place, Oxford Division;
– Hillcrest: Sweepstakes Second Place, Ensemble First Place, Duo/Trio Dance Second Place, Buckingham Division. 

The annual event at Southern Utah University this year drew a record 3,000 competitors from 118 schools in Utah, Nevada, Arizona, Colorado, Wisconsin and California. The competition is judged by arts professionals from cities including New York and Los Angeles. They also taught students workshops on topics such as stage combat, improvisation, movement, modern dance techniques, and choral performance.
