Canyons kindergarten students capped their first week of the 2013-2014 school year with a special day dedicated to the message that it is never too early to start getting ready for college.
Canyon View Elementary School Principal Brent Shaw and his staff went the extra mile earned extra credit, if you will to make Canyons fifth-annual Kindergarten College-Ready Day special for the students. They invited student leaders from Brighton High, including the mascot, Benny the Bengal, to cheer for the students as they received a “diploma” that states, “I will be college-ready!” The 80 kindergartners also signed a poster pledging to become a Brighton High Bengal, wore homemade mortarboard caps, and learned the names of Utah’s college and universities. Canyons Interim Superintendent Dr. Ginger Rhode also read a storybook to the Class of 2026 and talked about the importance of working hard at school.
Canyons District is focused on ensuring all students are college- and career-ready when they graduate high school, and recognizes the importance of expressing this goal early in a child’s education. Kindergarten classes in all 29 Canyons elementary schools host activities on Kindergarten College-Ready Day.
