Welcome Back! Students, Teachers Prepare For School Year

Canyons District welcomes students, faculty, staff and parents to the 2013-2014 school year. To be sure, this is a big year for Canyons District.

School starts on Monday Aug. 19 for students in the second through 12th grades. First-graders start Tuesday, Aug. 20, except for first-grade students at Copperview, East Midvale, Midvale and Sandy elementary schools. Those students start on Monday, Aug. 19. Kindergarten starts Monday, Aug. 26.  Start and end times vary for elementary and secondary schools.

Grade reconfiguration, which is being put into place this year, is a key part of the District’s academic plan. When school starts, all high school students, even freshmen, will be educated in high schools. Middle schools will offer students in sixth through eighth grades a one-of-a-kind curriculum and schedule to better prepare them for the future. Elementary schools will focus on improving instruction for children in kindergarten through fifth grade.

There may be some new faces in hallways, too. New boundaries are being enacted this year.

Also, students will attend three new schools: Corner Canyon High and Butler and Draper Park middle schools. New additions at Brighton and Hillcrest are being completed in time for the start of school, as well.

Please let us know if you have questions about the start of school. Call 801-826-5000 to reach a District representative or send an e-mail message to communications@canyonsdistrict.org.

Lucie Chamberlain

Alta View Elementary

If a movie about super teachers were ever made, Lucie Chamberlain would be a prime candidate for a leading role. Fortunately for her kindergarten students at Alta View Elementary, she already thrives in a supporting role for them. Parents thank her for being a “super teacher.” She is also described as an “amazing colleague.” Whether students need help in the classroom or from home while sick, Lucie goes above and beyond to help them learn, overcome fears, and feel important and cared for. Lucie is the reason a number of kids went from hating school to loving it, according to parents. The way she exudes patience, sweetness, positive energy, and love for her students with special needs melts is appreciated and admired. One parent noted: “Both my kids wish she could be their teacher forever.” Another added:  “She treats every student like their learning and their feelings are her priority.” Super teacher, indeed!
