Teacher Danny Drew this week is swapping his classroom at the Utah State Prison for a ballroom in Washington D.C.
There, he will join members of the White House staff and the President’s re-election campaign as they celebrate the Inauguration of President Barack Obama. Drew, a teacher at South Park Academy’s Timpanogos facility for female inmates, has been selected as an Inaugural Ball volunteer for a Jan. 22, 2013 staff celebration. Drew, who was invited to the event as a campaign volunteer, was selected following a process that included a review of a questionnaire and resume.
“I was blown away,” Drew said. “It’s beyond words, this opportunity, and the chance to share this opportunity with my son is just incredible.”
Drew is traveling with his family to Washington, D.C. Thursday morning for a mandatory training for Inaugural Ball volunteers. He understands the President is expected to attend the staff ball and address the crowd.
Drew will be there — with a mission. “My goal is to shake the President’s hand.” He also hopes to catch a glimpse of the Inauguration Ceremony from the National Mall on Monday, Jan. 21.
