Canyons District joins the country in celebrating November as National American Indian Heritage Month, a time set aside each year to honor and recognize the impact American Indian culture has had on our nation and world.
“Today, Native Americans are leaders in every aspect of our society from the classroom, to the boardroom, to the battlefield,” President Barack Obama said in a proclamation issued Thursday, Nov. 1, 2012. “This month, we celebrate and honor the many ways American Indians and Alaska Natives have enriched our Nation, and we renew our commitment to respecting each tribe’s identity while ensuring equal opportunity to pursue the American dream.”
To kick off the month of events and educational activities, CSD’s Office of Student Advocacy and Access is sponsoring the first-ever showing of the movie “Voices of Opportunity,” which was written and directed by Howard Ranier, a Taos Pueblo-Creek Indian who has been a professional photographer for 20 years.
The movie, which features some Canyons District students, is the most recent addition to a series of books and films Rainer has done to address issues facing the American Indian community. The free event will be Monday, Nov. 5, 2012, from 6-9 p.m. in the Professional Development Center of the Canyons Support Services Center, 9361 S. 300 East, Sandy. The public is invited.
The Office of Student Advocacy and Access also will make an announcement about a new scholarship opportunity for qualifying students.
