An Albion Middle School student has won a Wii and a $400 U.S. Savings Bond from Junior Scholastic magazine for her stellar artwork. Doyoun Park, a 15-year-old from Cottonwood Heights, won the grand prize in the magazine’s “Find Mapman” contest.  

The competition, which the magazine says drew about 9,000 entries, asked students to figure out a “mystery destination” and then draw a map of that location. Doyoun correctly surmised the mystery destination was Cambodia, and her map of the country drew praise.

“Doyoun’s map won the grand prize because it beautifully illustrates Cambodia’s countryside and temples,” wrote Junior Scholastic’s Jim McMahon in the May 14, 2012 edition. Twenty-five runners up received T-shirts.  Park also was honored at the school’s year-end awards assembly, said Principal Joanne Ackerman.

Park is Canyons District’s resident “poster child.”  This is the third major prize Park has won for her artwork. In 2009, Park’s drawing was selected as the top entrant in a contest held by the National Association for Pupil Transportation. Park’s artwork, which was chosen from a field of more than 200 entries, was used in a nationwide campaign to promote the bus safety week. A year earlier, Park won the National Missing Children’s Day poster contest.
