Congratulations, Advanced and Honors Diploma Recipients

The Salt Lake Tribune calls Canyons District’s Advanced and Honors diplomas a “success story.”  Click here to see the editorial.

Nearly two-thirds of the Class of 2012 has earned an Advanced or Honors diploma, an achievement indicating they have completed a more rigorous class schedule to prepare for the demands of college and careers.

In the Class of 2012:

 – 2,210 students are projected to graduate from Canyons’ four high schools (Alta, Brighton, Jordan, Hillcrest)
 – 62 percent (1,381 students) earned an Advanced or Honors Diploma (up from 60 percent last year)
 – Of the students who earned a differentiated diploma, 49 percent earned the more challenging Honors Diploma (up from 45 percent last year)

This marks the second year the Canyons Board of Education has offered Advanced and Honors diplomas to students who successfully complete a more rigorous class schedule in high school to better prepare for the demands of college and the workforce. Last year, Canyons became the first school district in Utah to award differentiated diplomas.

College- and career-readiness is strongly linked to the classes students take. The more rigorous the coursework, the better prepared the student. Approved by the Canyons Board of Education in February 2010, Advanced and Honors diplomas require students to complete two years of foreign language and take more rigorous coursework in science, math and English. Students earning the more challenging Honors Diploma also have achieved Career and College Readiness Benchmark Scores on the ACT college entrance test.

The Board and Superintendent are hosting a reception to honor Advanced and Honors diploma recipients on Tuesday, May 29, 2012, from 6 — 7:30 p.m. at Jordan High School, 95 E. Beetdigger Blvd. (9880 South) in Sandy. There, honored students will receive a gift from the Board of Education, and enjoy the company of friends, family, school officials, and business, education, and community leaders. Invited guests who have questions about the event are asked to call 801-826-5115.

Lucie Chamberlain

Alta View Elementary

If a movie about super teachers were ever made, Lucie Chamberlain would be a prime candidate for a leading role. Fortunately for her kindergarten students at Alta View Elementary, she already thrives in a supporting role for them. Parents thank her for being a “super teacher.” She is also described as an “amazing colleague.” Whether students need help in the classroom or from home while sick, Lucie goes above and beyond to help them learn, overcome fears, and feel important and cared for. Lucie is the reason a number of kids went from hating school to loving it, according to parents. The way she exudes patience, sweetness, positive energy, and love for her students with special needs melts is appreciated and admired. One parent noted: “Both my kids wish she could be their teacher forever.” Another added:  “She treats every student like their learning and their feelings are her priority.” Super teacher, indeed!
