Download an application to receive one of Canyons’ college- and career-ready high school diplomas, which encourage students to take rigorous classes so they can meet research-based standards of college-readiness and the heightened demands of today’s workforce. Canyons high schools will accept applications through April 10, 2012. The Canyons Board of Education will award the Advanced and Honors diplomas to qualifying students at commencement ceremonies in June.
Students seeking the Advanced Diploma must complete two credits of world language, demonstrate competency in Algebra 2, and focus core academic credits in more rigorous laboratory sciences and college-prep English (including College-Prep, Advanced Placement or Concurrent Enrollment) in the 12th grade.
Students seeking the Honors Diploma must meet Advanced Diploma standards and earn College Readiness Benchmark Scores on the ACT college-entrance exam. The Benchmark Scores are: 18 in English; 21 in Reading; 22 in Mathematics; and 24 in Science.
With endorsements from the Commissioner of the Utah System of Higher Education, the Utah Board of Regents, the Salt Lake Chamber, and the Utah Technology Council, the Canyons Board of Education in February 2010 voted to become Utah’s first school district to offer differentiated diplomas. The Board awarded the first Advanced and Honors diplomas to the Class of 2011.
The diplomas are part of the District’s career- and college-ready academic plan, which aims to better prepare students for college and careers by implementing the Common Core State Standards, reconfiguring school grade levels (i.e., K-5, 6-8, 9-12), and upgrading facilities with the help of a $250 million voter-approved bond.
