In observance of the holidays, the CSD District Offices both the Canyons Administrative Building and the Canyons Support Services Center will be closed Dec. 24 to Jan. 1. Schools will be out for winter break from Dec. 17 to Jan. 1.
In addition, we’ve received a handful of phone calls and e-mails from patrons and employees, asking if CSD will hold school and be open for the public’s business on Jan. 2, the day federally dedicated to the observance of the New Year’s holiday.
The answer is: Yes, schools and the District Office departments will be open Jan. 2.
Canyons District’s calendar is proposed by a Calendaring Committee, which is made up of parents, school principals, teachers and staff members. Much thought is put into the calendar, and many factors are taken into consideration when the proposals are put in front of the Board of Education, which has the final vote on the calendar. The Calendaring Committee was aware of the federal holiday observance designation when it proposed the calendar, but decided it was more important to safeguard three consecutive winter-break weekends for families.
Canyons District is not the sole Utah district that has opted to hold school on Jan. 2. In fact, seven others also return on that day. Districts that are resuming classes on Jan. 2 are Weber, Beaver, Duchesne, Grand, Iron, North Summit and Rich.
Employees won’t receive time and a half for work on Jan. 2. Our policy states that overtime will be granted to Education Support Professionals on certain days not observances and explicitly names “New Year’s Day,” which is Jan. 1. So, if a professional is called in to work on an emergency that occurs on Sunday, Jan. 1, 2012, we will pay that person time and a half for his or her work.
In addition, employees in Canyons District will be paid Dec. 22.
