Midvale Elementary second-grader Laura Rodriguez is the winner of a T-shirt design contest sponsored by a nonprofit organization that annually gives away 1,000 bicycles to underprivileged children.

The nonprofit group Bikes for Kids made the announcement Tuesday, May 17 at Midvale Elementary. The group honored Rodriguez, whose design was chosen from a field of 25 entries, at an assembly with her classmates and teachers.  

Rodriguez’s design will be printed on the T-shirts that will be given to children receiving new bicycles and helmets at the Bikes for Kids Utah bike giveaway on Saturday, May 21 at the Intermountain Medical Center in Murray.

The T-shirts are donated by Skyline Electric, which has provided funding for the shirts for four years.

“We loved Laura’s design and the messages of diversity and safety it contained,” said Debbie Reid, founder and director of Bikes for Kids Utah. “Reminding riders to be safe and depicting a rider appropriately wearing a helmet was important for us, and Laura’s design was perfect in that regard.”
