Canyons District joins others nationwide in celebrating Feb. 7-11 as National School Counseling Week, sponsored by the American School Counselor Association and the Utah School Counselor Association. The aim of the week is to highlight the impact school counselors can have in helping students achieve success at school and plan for college and careers.

School counselors are actively engaged in helping students examine their abilities, strengths, interests and talents, and they work in a partnership with parents as they encounter the challenges of raising children in today’s world.

A highlight of their work is the Student Education Occupation Plan, which helps students navigate their pathway to careers and college. Counselors work with administrator and teachers to provide an educational system where students can realize their potential and set healthy, realistic and optimistic aspirations for themselves.

Professional school counselors are certified, experienced educators with a master’s degree in guidance and counseling. They have ongoing training requirements as part of the standards required by USOE. The combination of their training and experience makes them an integral part of the total educational program.
