A Canyons District educator has been selected to receive one of this year’s Golden Apples for Excellence in Education, a prestigious award given annually to six of Utah’s top educators and two exceptional volunteers.
Maria Requena, a teacher at Midvale Elementary, is one of this year’s recipients. The awards program, which is spearheaded by the Utah Education Association and the PTA, is televised on KUED Channel 7, which is a sponsor of the awards program.
The Utah PTA Golden Apple Awards, celebrating its 20th year, airs May 27 at 7 p.m. and May 30 at 6 p.m. The broadcast features the awards ceremony, in combination with on-site footage shot in the recipients’ schools.
Requena joins a list of outstanding educators who are 2010 recipients. The Golden Apple Outstanding Educator winners are Douglas Jorgensen, Highland High School, Salt Lake City; Terry Hunter, Oak Canyon Junior High, Lindon; Rebecca Ivory, Riverview Jr. High in Murray; Lisa Roundy, Spring Creek Elementary, Provo; and LaNay King, Timpanogas Intermediate in Heber City.
The 2010 Outstanding Volunteer Awards will be presented to Ella McKnight at Lewiston Elementary in Lewiston and Loftin Harvey at Truman Elementary in West Valley City. Each Golden Apple Award honoree receives a $1,000 cash award and is honored at an awards ceremony and dinner May 22 at KUED.
Cash awards and program funding of the Golden Apple Awards is provided by the Emma Eccles Jones Foundation, NuSkin Enterprises, Utah Education Network, Educators Mutual Insurance Association and the Utah Education Association.
