Hillcrest Students Named National Merit Scholarship Finalists

Six outstanding students at Hillcrest High School have been named finalists in the 2010 National Merit Scholarship Program. They join 16,000 others nationwide who have met he requirements to advance past the semifinalist round.

The selection of some 8,200 Merit Scholarship winners is now in progress. Winners of the scholarship will be notified in March. Offers will be sent their home addresses and confidential notices will be forwarded to high school principals.

Congratulations to the six National Merit Scholar finalists at Hillcrest. They are:

  • Jeffrey R. Bennett
  • Albert L. Cui
  • Rachel C. Edwards
  • Blake L. Ellsion
  • Xueyou Wang
  • Anna C. Wright

More than 1.5 million juniors in about 22,000 high schools entered the 2010 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2008 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, which served as an initial screening of the program entrants.  The nationwide pool of the semifinalists, which represents less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors, includes the highest scoring entrants in each state.

Lucie Chamberlain

Alta View Elementary

If a movie about super teachers were ever made, Lucie Chamberlain would be a prime candidate for a leading role. Fortunately for her kindergarten students at Alta View Elementary, she already thrives in a supporting role for them. Parents thank her for being a “super teacher.” She is also described as an “amazing colleague.” Whether students need help in the classroom or from home while sick, Lucie goes above and beyond to help them learn, overcome fears, and feel important and cared for. Lucie is the reason a number of kids went from hating school to loving it, according to parents. The way she exudes patience, sweetness, positive energy, and love for her students with special needs melts is appreciated and admired. One parent noted: “Both my kids wish she could be their teacher forever.” Another added:  “She treats every student like their learning and their feelings are her priority.” Super teacher, indeed!
