Life Skills Academy Begins Adventure in New Home

Formerly known as the Canyons Transition Academy, the appropriately- and newly named Life Skills Academy is holding to their motto, “Adventure Starts Here” by starting the new year in a new home.

After years of planning and waiting, the Life Skills Academy relocated this month from the District Office to the Crescent Building, allowing the school to grow to meet demand for its services and programs. In just the past few weeks, LSA has added five additional students, bringing its roster to 56.

On Jan. 17, Superintendent Dr. Rick Robins and members of the Canyons Board of Education participated in an Open House tour of the school’s new location, which Dr. Robins says has, “imbued the school with a renewed sense of purpose and pride.”

The Board of Education approved funding to retrofit the Crescent Building, allowing for the staff and faculty to move over during Winter Recess. “We are so grateful to the Board and administration for their support,” said Special Education administrator Linda Hall.

The Life Skills Academy exists to help special education students who are aging out of high school acquire the skills they need to work and live independently. The new space features a staged version of a studio apartment and fully equipped kitchen for hands-on learning. The Main Office houses Medicaid staff and the school is partnering with Workforce Services and Vocational Rehabilitation to offer additional wrap-around supports.

“It’s really a one-stop shop for families to access resources they need to support their students on the path to independence,” Hall said.

The new location also sports more room for LSA’s successful work-based learning program, which places students in jobs with local employers.

To cap it all off, students now have a colorful tree-frog logo to call their own.

“It’s a dream come true,” Hall said. “We couldn’t be happier.”

Lucie Chamberlain

Alta View Elementary

If a movie about super teachers were ever made, Lucie Chamberlain would be a prime candidate for a leading role. Fortunately for her kindergarten students at Alta View Elementary, she already thrives in a supporting role for them. Parents thank her for being a “super teacher.” She is also described as an “amazing colleague.” Whether students need help in the classroom or from home while sick, Lucie goes above and beyond to help them learn, overcome fears, and feel important and cared for. Lucie is the reason a number of kids went from hating school to loving it, according to parents. The way she exudes patience, sweetness, positive energy, and love for her students with special needs melts is appreciated and admired. One parent noted: “Both my kids wish she could be their teacher forever.” Another added:  “She treats every student like their learning and their feelings are her priority.” Super teacher, indeed!
