Split-Schedule at Corner Canyon Extended At Least One More Week

A temporary schedule has been extended at Corner Canyon High until at least Friday, Sept. 25.

The split-schedule was put into place at Corner Canyon High on Monday, Sept. 14 and was originally intended to last one week. A continued rise in positive COVID-19 cases associated with the high school led to a Tuesday night decision to lengthen the timeline of the temporary schedule. 

On Monday, Sept. 14 no students attended CCHS to allow administrators, teachers, and staff time to prepare for the temporary schedule. This also gave families time to make any needed adjustments to their personal schedules.

On Tuesday, Sept. 15, Charger students with the last names A-K attended on an A-Day schedule. This week’s schedule continues as follows:  

  • Wednesday, Sept. 16 (B-Day) For students with last names starting with letters A-K 
  • Thursday, Sept. 17 (A-Day) For students with last names starting with letters L-Z
  • Friday, Sept. 18 (B-Day) For students with last names starting with letters L-Z 

Next week, the pattern will repeat: 

  • Monday, Sept. 21 (A-Day) For students with last names starting with letters A-K
  • Tuesday, Sept. 22 (B-Day), For students with last names starting with letters A-K 
  • Wednesday. Sept. 23 (A-Day) For students with last names starting with letters L-Z
  • Thursday, Sept. 24 (B-Day) For students with last names starting with letters L-Z 
  • Friday, Sept. 25 — No school • Teacher-Compensation Day for Parent Teacher Conferences 

When students are not at school, their learning will be supported through Canvas.  

Siblings from blended CCHS families who have different last names can pick a day to attend together.  

A split-schedule reduces the number of students on campus at any one time. It is hoped this will better support physical distancing and supplement existing contact tracing and quarantine efforts. School nurses and administrators, working with local health authorities, have moved to immediately quarantine anyone known to have been within close contact of a positive case.  

During the school day, all students should adhere to the split schedule, even those who have a class period dedicated to sports or performing arts practices. After-school activities and sports events will continue as scheduled in line with the guidelines set forth by the Utah High School Activities Association. Those guidelines include required temperature and symptom checks as part of student participation. 

On Monday, Sept. 28, it is hoped that the school can return to its regular schedule with all in-person learning students attending five days a week, Monday through Friday. Parents will receive updates so they can plan for their families accordingly. 

However, if confirmed active COVID-19 cases associated with Corner Canyon High continue to rise, the temporary schedule may remain intact or other additional precautionary measures may need to be taken after CSD consults with the Salt Lake County Health Department. 

To keep counts from rising further, CSD asks the Charger community for continued adherence to health and safety protocols. Parents are urged to continue monitoring children for symptoms of COVID-19. Please contact a health provider immediately if your child begins to suffer a fever, cough, or has difficulty breathing. Please keep your child home if they are ill.

Alta View Elementary

If a movie about super teachers were ever made, Lucie Chamberlain would be a prime candidate for a leading role. Fortunately for her kindergarten students at Alta View Elementary, she already thrives in a supporting role for them. Parents thank her for being a “super teacher.” She is also described as an “amazing colleague.” Whether students need help in the classroom or from home while sick, Lucie goes above and beyond to help them learn, overcome fears, and feel important and cared for. Lucie is the reason a number of kids went from hating school to loving it, according to parents. The way she exudes patience, sweetness, positive energy, and love for her students with special needs melts is appreciated and admired. One parent noted: “Both my kids wish she could be their teacher forever.” Another added:  “She treats every student like their learning and their feelings are her priority.” Super teacher, indeed!
