Building Together Momentum

12943 S. 700 East, Draper
Groundbreaking: April 27, 2011
Opening Celebration: Aug. 13, 2013

Shortly after Canyons began operating on July 1, 2009, Canyons’ Board of Education established a vision for the District, and set a goal of preparing all students for the rigors of college and careers. With that in mind, Draper’s first high school was planned with a collegiate feel that would inspire its students to aim for great heights. Corner Canyon was built to represent a new social hub for the city, since the former site, The Round House, was razed in the 1960s. To accommodate the growing needs of a fast-growing population in Draper, the school was built with a 120-seat lecture hall, 1,200-seat auditorium, 3,300-seat gymnasium and football field with seating for 3,500 home spectators and 1,200 visiting spectators. It features an abundance of natural light in the corridors and classrooms, open common areas and wiring for the use of state-of-the art technology. As a finishing touch, architects added a “victory light” in the iconic dome of the school’s entrance as a way of celebrating the accomplishments and achievements of all of Corner Canyon’s students.

Lucie Chamberlain

Alta View Elementary

If a movie about super teachers were ever made, Lucie Chamberlain would be a prime candidate for a leading role. Fortunately for her kindergarten students at Alta View Elementary, she already thrives in a supporting role for them. Parents thank her for being a “super teacher.” She is also described as an “amazing colleague.” Whether students need help in the classroom or from home while sick, Lucie goes above and beyond to help them learn, overcome fears, and feel important and cared for. Lucie is the reason a number of kids went from hating school to loving it, according to parents. The way she exudes patience, sweetness, positive energy, and love for her students with special needs melts is appreciated and admired. One parent noted: “Both my kids wish she could be their teacher forever.” Another added:  “She treats every student like their learning and their feelings are her priority.” Super teacher, indeed!
