Human Resources

Canyons District is committed to recruiting and retaining the best and brightest teachers and education support professionals, and is willing to invest in them. Since its inception, the District has given employees some kind of compensation increase, a cost-of-living or step increase, or both. Now, the Board of Education has approved boosting CSD's starting-teacher salary by more than $5,000 while also providing salary hikes for mid-career and veteran educators. The new teaching salary schedule brings the starting salary for a new teacher to $40,500. Every licensed employee will see no less than a 4 percent jump and the average increase will be 6.5 percent. In addition, the new single-lane schedule provides an opportunity for educators to make continuous positive impacts to their lifetime earnings. This is welcome news for CSD recruiters Jo Jolley and Sally Sansom who are criss-crossing the country to find top talent to fill our classrooms. Teacher recruitment season is serious business, and with a nationwide teacher shortage, the stakes are higher today than ever before, says Sansom. Even so, Canyons has managed to attract the nation's best; 38 percent of our teachers come from outside Utah. Some are drawn by the state’s natural beauty; how many metropolitan areas are within driving distance of eight ski resorts and five national parks? Others know that because this District was created less than a decade ago by a vote of the people, we enjoy uncommon levels of community support. Perhaps it’s our size — big enough to have outstanding resources and top talent, but small enough to have to rely on each other to do our best work. Or maybe it’s the fact that as the rest of the world chases the next big reform idea, we’ve been unflagging in our focus on preparing students for the rigors of college and careers. Take a moment to see what we have to offer you at this stage in your career, and learn why #CSDistheplacetobe.

You can teach anywhere. Why choose Canyons School District?

1. Competitive Salaries

Since its inception, CSD has given teachers some kind of compensation increase, a cost-of-living or step increase, or both — even during the Great Recession. Now, as part of contract negotiations, the Board of Education is considering boosting CSD's starting teacher salary by more than $5,000. The proposed salary schedule, which includes a bump in pay for all teachers, is still under review by the Canyons Board of Education and Administration. For the 2017-2018 school year, however, we anticipate the starting salary for a new teacher in Canyons District to be $40,000.

2. Natural Beauty

There are as few places as starkly beautiful as Utah with its pine forests, sweeping deserts, roaring rivers and frontier towns—and Canyons District is within driving distance of all of it:
  • 11 ski resorts
  • 5 national parks
  • Endless outdoor recreational opportunities, from hiking and fishing to river rafting, rock climbing, mountain biking, and even sailing.

3. Quality of Life

Utah is safe, affordable and a great place to raise a family
  • Salt Lake has the 21st highest adjusted teacher pay, according to a comparison of 60 major metropolitan areas.
  • Utah blows past the competition and ranks as the No. 1 place to live and do business due to its booming, high-tech economy, low unemployment, and low cost of living.
  • Salt Lake is one of the most educated cities in the country with high graduation rates and college attainment, according to a WalletHub study.

4. Urban Perks

Where else can you live this close to the great outdoors and a major city with an active nightlife and rich cultural and educational resources?
  • 11 major colleges and universities
  • Dozens of museums
  • Professional ballet, symphony and opera
  • World renowned Utah Shakespearean Festival

5. Professional Growth

  • $500,000 teacher grants awarded over three years.
  • More classroom technology specialists per school than any other school district in Utah.
  • First middle schools in Utah to be named STEM-schools.
