First Day of School

Canyons' premiere first day of school offered many opportunities for students and employees, as well as the community, to get involved. Canyons School District administrators fanned out to school campuses district-wide to help wherever needed. REAL Salt Lake offered all Canyons students buy-one, get-one-free ticket vouchers and a free meal at the stadium Aug. 26 to emphasize the importance of education and celebrate the new district’s first day of school. Truth-in-Taxation Hearing

The Canyons School District’s proposed budget for FY10 is approximately $200 million. It attempts to maintain academic programs and the salary schedule for educators and education support professionals. The budget includes a proposed tax increase that would generate an additional $4.15 million in tax revenue. The impact on a $311,000 home would be an additional $46 annually, or a 3.8 percent increase over last year, on average. Additional tax revenues are needed to fund the $3.8 million Canyons is required to give Jordan School District under a 2008 countywide capital equalization law. Debby Wetzel - Music to her ears

{yoogallery src=[/images/stories/debbywetzel]} Debby Wetzel wants to teach the world to sing. And dance. And play instruments. Anything, it seems, to introduce young minds to the world of music. Wetzel, who has been honored by the Utah Music Educators Association as its top teacher for 2008, is thrilled to see lessons on chords and cadence help children learn. “I want to do this forever,” says Wetzel, Oakdale Elementary School’s music specialist. “I get to sing and play with kids.
