Albert Cui, a Hillcrest High School senior, has been selected as a member of the 22nd class of Coca-Cola Scholars. Cui is one of 253 high school seniors who will receive a cash scholarship from the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation. Fifty-three will win $20,000. Two hundred will receive $10,000 scholarships. A Canyons District educator has been selected to receive one of this year’s Golden Apples for Excellence in Education, a prestigious award given annually to six of Utah's top educators and two exceptional volunteers. Maria Requena, a teacher at Midvale Elementary, is one of this year’s recipients. The awards program, which is spearheaded by the Utah Education Association and the PTA, is televised on KUED Channel 7, which is a sponsor of the awards program. The Board of Education of Canyons School District is pleased to announce the selection of Joanne Ackerman as the new principal of Albion Middle School. Ackerman, who is Principal of West Jordan Middle School, was appointed Tuesday. Twenty students from Brighton High School recently attended the National High School Model United Nations competition in New York City. The students from Canyons District walked away with a prestigious award for their work.  At the contest, Brighton’s Model U.N. team represented Finland, and students also had special seats representing Austria on the Security Council, which included participation in a late-night emergency crisis session.  They also represented Amnesty International on the Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) Forum.All of the delegates performed exceptionally well.
