Canyons District Employees Approve Social Security Participation SANDY – Employees in Utah's first new school district created in 100 years have voted to participate in Social Security, Canyons School District announced Monday. As of Monday afternoon, 2,397 ballots had been counted by the Utah Division of Finance. Of the ballots counted, 1,537, or 64.1 percent, voted to participate in Social Security, according to preliminary results. Some 860 employees, or 35.9 percent, voted not to participate in Social Security. Voter turnout was 92.8 percent of 2,583 eligible voters. The Utah Association the School Resource Officers has named David Barrett, Assistant Principal at Union Middle School, the 2009-2010 School Administrator of The Year. Barrett was given the award at the Utah Council for Crime Prevention's 12th annual Power of Prevention Conference. Albion student wins national poster contest

{yoogallery src=[/images/stories/albion-bus/]}Doyoun Park is the “poster child” of the Canyons School District.  Park, a seventh grader at Albion Middle School, this month won her second national poster contest.   A poster the 13-year-old drew in just a few errant hours after school one day last year was selected as the top entrant in the contest held by the National Association for Pupil Transportation, which annually organizes the National School Bus Safety Week. Park’s artwork, which was chosen from a field of more than 200 entries, will be used in a nationwide campaign to promote the bus safety week, Oct. 18-222. …
Midvalley Elementary students to contact the International Space Station You might have seen the International Space Station as a shimmering blip streaking across the night sky. On Wednesday, Dec. 2, Midvalley Elementary students in Midvale will have a chance to talk with the astronauts inside. Midvalley students will contact the space station through Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS), a program sponsored by NASA, the American Radio Relay League, and the Radio Amateur Satellite Corp. Middle Schools Intramurals Results

Canyons School District's first-ever districtwide middle school intramural athletics competition was notable for its formidable teams, fun atmosphere and fast-to-applaud-for-all sportsmanship. The team from Indian Hills snagged the over-all team trophy, with Crescent View and Albion winning second and third, respectively. Teams from each of Canyons' eight middle schools ran a 2-mile cross-country race around Eastmont Middle School's campus. The Oct. 24 contest, which the District hopes to make an annual event, was developed to promote healthy lifestyles and gauge interest for future competitive sports programs.
