Higher Education Commissioner Endorses Diploma Proposal

Canyons School District’s proposal to offer advanced diplomas to prepare students for the rigors of college and the workforce has received the endorsement of the Commissioner of Higher Education and the Utah State Board of Regents, the governor-appointed panel that oversees the state’s public colleges and universities.

At a meeting Tuesday with the Canyons Board of Education, Commissioner William A. Sederburg delivered a letter of support for Canyons’ Academic Master Plan, the capstone of which is a two-tiered, opt-in advanced diploma proposal.
“I was eager to learn of your innovative approach to increase graduation standards and improve college and career-ready success of your students with your Differentiated Diploma Proposal,” Commissioner Sederburg wrote in the letter.

“I commend you for your vision and leadership in attempting to make sure all students obtain the knowledge and support needed to improve their postsecondary success and achieve their goals. I hope and expect that other districts will follow your lead. On behalf of the Utah State Board of Regents, I offer our endorsement of your proposal and pledge our support.”

Lucie Chamberlain

Alta View Elementary

If a movie about super teachers were ever made, Lucie Chamberlain would be a prime candidate for a leading role. Fortunately for her kindergarten students at Alta View Elementary, she already thrives in a supporting role for them. Parents thank her for being a “super teacher.” She is also described as an “amazing colleague.” Whether students need help in the classroom or from home while sick, Lucie goes above and beyond to help them learn, overcome fears, and feel important and cared for. Lucie is the reason a number of kids went from hating school to loving it, according to parents. The way she exudes patience, sweetness, positive energy, and love for her students with special needs melts is appreciated and admired. One parent noted: “Both my kids wish she could be their teacher forever.” Another added:  “She treats every student like their learning and their feelings are her priority.” Super teacher, indeed!
